Watch the Redmi 12 series unveiling event live here

The Redmi 12 series is arriving in India today at a true international unveiling. We expect no less than two phones - the already known Redmi 12 4G and a variant with 5G capabilities that will have at least a different chipset, enabled for next-gen mobile networks. The event begins at 12 PM IST, which is 6:30 UTC. There is a live stream on YouTube, which you can find below. The Redmi 12 has a Helio G88 chipset, and we were unimpressed in our review with the odd choice for Xiaomi to pick such a dated chipset. Its 5G variant is expected to have a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 chipset, which is a...

Top 10 trending phones of week 30

Samsung announced its latest foldables this week, but it's the old mid-ranger that returns to the top of our trending chart. The Galaxy A54 forms a familiar pairing with Galaxy S23 Ultra in the lead. The Redmi Note 12 and its Pro sibling follow in third and fourth positions, meaning the best placed of the newly announced phones is fifth. That's the Galaxy Z Flip5, which just edged the Redmi 12. Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is best placed among phones not made by Samsung or Xiaomi, coming in seventh. Realme C53 is eight, while the Galaxy A34 slipped to ninth. That means the other...

Week 30 in review: Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Fold5, Z Flip5, Watch 6, Tab S9

Samsung unveiled its new flagship foldables, smartwatches, and tablets this week. It happens to be the earliest unveil of a Galaxy Z Fold ever by nearly a month. The Galaxy Z Fold5 finally removes the gap and closes flat. Otherwise, it's a rather tame update mostly focused around the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and the new hinge design. The displays have the main characteristics, although the big display is 30% brighter, the cameras are the same, and so is the battery size and charging speed. Price-wise, the Galaxy Z Fold5's 12/256GB version is €1,900/£1,749/$1,800, 12/512GB costs...

Honor shares Magic V2 design story as sales open in China

Honor's Magic V2 foldable has just launched in China and the company shared the rather interesting design story behind the device. The centerpiece element of the design process is portability and it shows. The handset is considerably thinner and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 (10.1 mm vs. 13.4 mm when unfolded and 231 g vs. 253 g). Honor argues that according to their market research, consumers have portability at top of their priority list. Let's start with the innovative hinge design. It uses titanium elements, which boast higher rigidity, lower weight and anti-corrosion...

Sony has put a lot of effort into making pro-grade content-creation apps for its flagship Xperia phones. The latest Xperia 1 V has a trio of those - Photo Pro, Video Pro, and Cinema Pro - that unlock the potential of the phone's imaging system. You can access tech straight out of Sony's dedicated camera division like the advanced burst shooting with subject tracking and advanced autofocus. In video, you can choose Sony's flatter Cinetone profile, which can be tuned to your specific style. We delve deep into all three apps and what's possible with them and the Xperia 1 V combination....

Weekly poll: Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5 pre-orders have started, who is getting one?

Samsung's next generation foldables are almost here - they are already on pre-order and will start shipping in a couple of weeks time. But the market they enter is more heavily contested than ever. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is no longer the only horizontal foldable in North America, following the launch of the Google Pixel Fold. The Fold may not have the best chipset in the world, but it has a very similar inner display, an IPX8 water resistance rating and, perhaps, better cameras. You can check out the photos we took with the Z Fold5 in Seoul - it's too early to discuss quality...

Google Pixel Watch 2 watch faces leak online

As it's usually the case with Google products, they leak way before being announced. It seems that the upcoming Pixel Watch 2 won't be an exception to the rule as Android Authority got a hold of the watch faces. After all, watch faces are an intrinsic part of a smartwatch and OEMs try to offer a wide variety and customization options. Designers have come up with four main categories - Accessible, Arc, Bold Digital and Analog Bold. The first category of watch faces prioritizes legibility and simplicity. They look plain and minimize distractions. Here are the four watch faces that fall...

Weekly poll results: the ZTE nubia Z50S Pro wins is a potential hit

Last week’s poll shows that the ZTE nubia Z50S Pro has a lot of potential – some are holding off until they can see what this phone can do before making their mind up, but for the most part people love the new Pro. Its gaming-focused cousin, the Red Magic 8S Pro didn’t draw as much interest and that’s no surprise, it’s more of a niche phone. The nubia is an all-round powerhouse with a unique camera. It’s a bit odd then that the main criticism of the phone is about its cameras. First, some were unhappy with the downgrade on the telephoto module – it went from a 64MP 85mm camera on the...

The Honor Pad X9 has a metal unibody design. It is 6.9mm thin, weighs 495 g, and packs an 11.5" 120Hz LCD with a resolution of 2,000x1,200...

Samsung disables high bitrate 8K video recording on Galaxy S23 Ultra

After the June software update, users are reporting that 8K video recording using the high bitrate mode is no longer available. The option in the camera menu is still there, but the toggle is grayed out. There's no mention in the changelog nor an explanation from Samsung. Some believe that the high bitrate option was disabled due to stability issues. Users reported that sometimes recording 8K videos would result in stuttering and videos appear choppy. Perhaps that's why Samsung decided to disable the feature until it finds a way to resolve the issue. Either way, it would have been...

AMD announces Radeon RX 7900 GRE in China

AMD today announced the Radeon RX 7900 GRE desktop graphics. Although announced first in China, it seems the card will also be available globally. The RX 7900 GRE (which stands for Golden Rabbit Edition) is a cut-down version of the RX 7900 XT with some minor reductions to the GPU and significant reductions to the memory. Compared to the 7900 XT's 84 compute units, the 7900 GRE has 80. The game clock drops from 2000MHz to 1880MHz. The 20GB 20Gbps 320-bit memory drops down to 16GB 18Gbps 256-bit, which causes the memory bandwidth to drop from 800GB/s to 576GB/s. The Infinity...

Samsung boss says dustproofing foldables is hard but they're still working on it

Multiple rumors prior to launch said the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5 would be the first foldables to arrive on the market with dust protection alongside water ingress protection, but those rumors turned out to be wrong. Like their predecessors, the new foldables are only rated for water resistance. Samsung's mobile boss TM Roh says the company is still hard at work trying to come up with ways to make foldable smartphones dustproof - so the intention was definitely there for this generation, things just didn't materialize. According to Roh, more time is needed to develop a solution for...

Samsung Galaxy M44 surfaces in benchmark listing with surprising chipset

Samsung is working on a new smartphone to bring into the already very crowded mid-range space, and it's been spotted in the Geekbench online results database today. That's definitely not out of the ordinary - someone at Samsung has a prototype in hand and is running benchmarks on it. What is a bit more interesting than the fact that prototypes are being benchmarked is that this one seems to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 SoC. That's an odd choice on Samsung's part, first because it's a Qualcomm chip and not one of its own Exynos parts, but also because the Snapdragon 888 is almost...

Counterpoint: US smartphone shipments fell by 24% compared to Q2 2022

According to market research carried out by Counterpoint, the US smartphone market shrunk by a whopping 24% year-over-year in Q2 this year. That doesn't come as a surprise since this is the third consecutive quarter with declining sales. Manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola and TCL-Alcatel saw the biggest decline in shipments. Samsung's shipments fell 37%, Motorola's by 17% and TCL-Alcatel's by 69%. Interestingly, Apple's shipments shrunk by just 6% despite the bleeding smartphone market, so expectations for the upcoming iPhone 15 series remain bullish, analysts say. Google was the only...

While the L1 and L2 cache remain at 1MB and 16MB, respectively, the L3 cache goes from the 7945HX's sizable 64MB to an impressive 128MB for a total of 145MB cache. Introduced first on the Ryzen 7 5800X3D desktop processor last year, the AMD 3D V-Cache technology essentially stacks an extra layer of memory on the CPU die. While most apps show no improvement from the added cache, games tend to...

WhatsApp now lets you send video messages

Voice messages have been a staple feature of WhatsApp for years now. And so have voice calls. But also video calls. Spot what's missing in this series? Indeed, video messages. Well, they were missing, up until today that is. WhatsApp finally supports sending and receiving video messages. These can be up to 60 seconds long each, and are protected with WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. Sending a video message has been made intentionally similar to the way sending a voice message works, so that there isn't an additional learning curve. The icon previously meant for voice messages can...

Google rolls out automatic AirTag alerts for Android in bid to prevent stalking

Back in May, Google and Apple jointly announced that they were teaming up to prevent unwanted tracking through AirTags and similar devices. Today, Google is announcing that the rollout of unknown tracker alerts is now beginning on devices running Android 6.0 and later. Right now, this only works with AirTags, but Google says it's working with tag manufacturers to expand this protection to other tracking tags over time. Here's how it works. If an unknown Bluetooth tracker is separated from its owner and determined to be traveling with you, you will be notified on your Android device. If...

According to Samsung Germany's customer support, the Korean company will release the One UI 6.0 beta based on Android 14 on August 2 for the Galaxy S23 family. Then, on August 9, so exactly one week later, the Galaxy A34 5G and Galaxy A54 5G will get it too. It's nice to see that Samsung isn't forgetting about its best-selling mid-rangers when it comes to these beta releases, and isn't focusing only on high-end models. Of course, the high-end models are still covered, and they're still first in line, as you'd expect, but only one week of waiting for your mid-ranger to get the beta isn't...

Samsung completely redesigned the hinge on its 2023 foldables and the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 are all the better for it. The flip even got a much larger, much more usable cover display (and apparently, it can run any app, but there is a catch). Samsung also introduced a new generation of its Tab S slates, which upgrade to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset (as did the Z foldables). Also, they now have IP68 dust and water resistance, you can take them to the pool without worries. And there are new smartwatches too – the rotating bezel is back! There is no Pro model this...

The handset captures great shots in relatively good lighting, to no one's surprise. All three cameras seem very competent in this regard. One of the sweetest Google OS updates, the Android KitKat 4.4, will no longer be supported by Google Play Services. The message came from the Android Developers Blog, where it was revealed API levels 19 and 20 will not receive APK versions beyond 23.30.99, starting August 2023. This means devices with KitKat will not get the latest version of the Play Store, which will essentially not allow users to update apps, and their devices will slowly be rendered unusable. Android KitKat introduced updates that are still valid today, over ten years after the OS was launched. The system brought...

The Xreal Beam starts shipping in the US and Japan

The Xreal Beam starts shipping today in the US and Japan. The Beam is an alternative way to connect AR headsets like the Xreal Air to your PC, console or phone. Normally, you need a wired USB C-to-C connection between the headset and your device. With the Beam, however, you can go wireless. It still needs a USB connection to the glasses, but it’s a small device that you can slip in your pocket (doable with a phone, not so much with a PC or even a Nintendo Switch). The Beam also acts like a power bank and can run the Air for up to 3.5 hours. Additionally, there are two USB-C ports...

Size isn’t everything, though, and Sony’s next two sensors will go slightly smaller but will have clever designs, according to unofficial reports. The Sony IMX903 is allegedly a 1/1.14” sensor with 48MP resolution and 1.4µm pixels (compared to 1.6µm on the IMX989). It will support dual pixel autofocus, so each pixel will be made out of two photo diodes, each 0.7 x 1.4µm in size. The autofocus system will be able to quickly acquire and track focus on moving...

Being one of the most anticipated phones of the year, there've been plenty of rumors and leaks to give us more than a rough idea of what the phone will bring. Interestingly, there are some official details too - the Z Flip5 is featured heavily in Samsung's promotion of the upcoming Z series, more so than the pricier Z Fold5. Motorola Razr 40 in for review

It's been about a month since the vanilla Motorola Razr 40 was released, and we finally get to play with it in the office. Motorola went with a lineup release instead of a single smartphone release this year, and we can see the logic behind it. The Razr 40 Ultra combines the latest and greatest from Motorola at a price premium, while the vanilla Razr 40 is a toned-down version of the same phone with considerably lower pricing. Huawei Watch 4 Pro review

Huawei introduced the Watch 4 series in early May, and it is one of the best smartwatches the company has ever released, at least on paper. We got a unit for review early this month, and after testing all the new features HarmonyOS 3.0 brought, we are ready with our full impressions. The design evokes classic cameras with a mix of metal and leather (well, faux leather). The display is basically the same size as the Red Magic at 6.78” and...
